Finally The 21-7 Technique Explained
21-7 Technique
Ninety seven percent of the American public has never had a panic attack but for the remaining three per cent life has been miserable because of them. A person under going a panic attack feels an unreasonable fear of normal social and work situations of life and seeks medical attention but gets no practical help. A panic attack changes a person’s life. After the attack, it is the thought of a recurrence of the panic attack which causes anxious bodily reactions and a miserable and lonely existence. The thought of another panic attack leads to a painful knot in the stomach, a racing heart, difficulty in breathing, dizziness and inability to concentrate and to do even simple jobs. Medication does not work and has many side effects.

At last there is help on the horizon in the form of the 21-7 technique which is part of the Panic Away therapy of Barry McDonagh.
Panic Away is an e book written by Barry McDonagh which is also available in DVD format. Barry McDonagh himself was a victim of panic attacks and he developed the Panic Away system to cure himself. The 21-7 technique is a part of it. It gives people an immediate way out of fearing a panic attack.
The 21-7 technique teaches people not to regress into the past looking for reasons for their original panic attack but rather to break out of the anxiety cycle. It is important for us to understand the link between our brain and our body. In a panic attack the control of the body moves from the front (prefrontal cortex) of the brain which is in charge of logic, rational thinking and decision making, to the midbrain (periaqueductal grey area) which is in charge of survival and as a consequence the ideas of resistance, aggression or escape.
The main idea of the 21-7 technique is to bring the control of the body back to the prefrontal cortex of the brain. Deep breathing is an essential part of it; it basically marks time while the victim tries immediately to reprogram the mind to react in a positive manner. It is an off shoot of CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Basically the technique breaks down a panic attack by a simple twenty one second countdown and this is supported by a seven minute breathing exercise. At the end of this 21-7 manoeuvre the anxiety attack is gone. It is the new version of the old adage count to ten before responding to provocation. The 21-7 technique works and all the answers are there in Panic Away, an e-book by Barry McDonagh.
